Google Ads is shown for a word typed into the search engine — a short, transactional signal, with keywords, match types and twenty years of benchmarks. ChatGPT Ads is shown under ChatGPT’s answer by relevance to a conversation in which a person describes their situation in sentences — targeting is through context hints, not keywords, and OpenAI states that as of September 2026 there are no performance benchmarks by industry. Google charges per click, per conversion or by target return; ChatGPT charges per 1,000 impressions or per click, including in campaigns optimised for conversions. Google is for capturing existing demand with proven volume; ChatGPT is for presence earlier in the decision, with a customer who is still comparing. The point is not replacement but complement: ChatGPT Ads is tested as an additional channel with a small budget, while Google continues to bring the main volume. Below is the comparison point by point.

I am Hristiyan Panov — a Performance Marketing consultant with over 5 years of experience and over €2,000,000 in managed ad budget for more than 90 companies on Google and Meta. Below is a comparison between the two channels based on the official documentation and on what can be verified in my own account.

What moment of the decision does each channel capture?

A Google search is a signal of an already formulated need: “Gedore 108-piece set price”. A ChatGPT conversation is earlier and richer: “I’m repairing my car myself, what tools do I need to replace brake pads and discs?”. The second person has not yet decided what to buy, but has described their situation more precisely than any keyword. OpenAI describes this as presence “while people research, compare and decide”. Google captures the end of this process; ChatGPT, the middle of it.

The practical consequence: an ad in ChatGPT should respond to the comparison the customer is making, not push them towards a purchase. The first advertisers report that ads that answer the question perform better than purely commercial ones, and that landing pages that explain the choice work better than the home page. In detail: how advertising in ChatGPT works.

How is the ad targeted — keywords versus context hints?

In Google Ads, targeting is by keywords with match types, negative keywords, audiences and signals. In ChatGPT Ads, targeting is by context hints — descriptions of situations in which the product is useful, set at the ad group level. They are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in a specific conversation. There is no “search terms” report: Ads Manager does not show which conversations triggered the ad. This is a significant difference for anyone used to cleaning up the account through the search terms report. In detail: how to write context hints.

Geographic targeting exists in both places: ChatGPT Ads supports countries and, in the USA, states, DMAs and postal codes; in other countries availability is checked in the location selection when creating the campaign. Personalised ads based on chat history are initially not offered in the European Economic Area.

How is payment made and what are the budgets?

Google offers payment per click and automatic strategies based on a target cost per conversion or a target return. ChatGPT offers three objectives: Reach, paid per 1,000 impressions; Clicks, paid per click; and Conversions (oCPC), in which the campaign is optimised towards a standard event but payment remains per click. There is no payment per conversion and no target return. OpenAI recommends an initial maximum bid of 3–5 USD per click for CPC campaigns.

The minimum daily budget in ChatGPT Ads depends on the account currency and is not currently published in euros. For a meaningful first test I recommend an advertising budget of €600 to €1,000 for 30 days, while the main budget stays in Google. Breakdown: how much advertising in ChatGPT costs and how much Google advertising costs.

What are the formats and how much production do they require?

Google Search works with responsive text ads with up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions; Performance Max and Shopping add visuals, video and a product feed. ChatGPT Ads has one format: name and logo, headline (16–24 characters recommended, 50 maximum), description (32–48 characters, 100 maximum), a square visual up to 1200×1200 px and a landing page. For online shops there are also product feed campaigns, which show a product, price and brand; OpenAI states that they are among the strongest in the programme so far.

Production in ChatGPT is lighter, but the requirement for variety is higher: OpenAI recommends many different headline and description variants for each offer, not cosmetic reworkings of one text. The value shifts from the visuals to the structure of intents.

How is the result measured?

Google Ads has a mature ecosystem: conversions, Enhanced Conversions, offline import, Consent Mode and a link with GA4. ChatGPT Ads offers the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API with deduplication by event ID, the oppref click reference, automatic advanced matching and a report with conversions, revenue and ROAS by the order_created event. Conversions enter the report with a 24–48 hour delay, and the view-through window is fixed at one day. UTM parameters work in both places.

The practical difference is in the order of checking. With Google, you reconcile the conversion in the account and in GA4. With ChatGPT, you reconcile the pixel, the Conversions API and the order in the shop.

the pixel loads along the whole path to checkout, not only on the thank-you page;

the event ID is the same in the browser event and the server event, otherwise the order is counted twice;

oppref is recorded with the order, so that the click can be linked to the sale;

order_created is sent with a real value and currency, otherwise ROAS in the report has no basis;

the report is read after the delay has passed, not on the same day.

What can be expected and what cannot?

For Google there are twenty years of data by industry. For ChatGPT, OpenAI states explicitly that there are no benchmarks by advertiser, industry or campaign type. The observations published by the first agencies — that CTR is lower than on Google Search, that cost per click is medium to high, and that ads that answer the question perform better than commercial ones — come from individual accounts and early months and are not a planning baseline for Bulgaria.

That is why the expectation is calibrated from your own numbers: before launch, record the cost per result and ROAS from Google as a baseline for comparison.

read by cost per result, not by CTR — a lower CTR with a cheaper order is not a problem;

do not move budget from a working campaign in Google, so as not to mix two changes;

look at the report by campaign, group and ad — the average hides the differences;

with low volume, wait for data instead of changing bids every day;

account for the conversion delay before reading the result.

The reliable method remains a test in your own account with working tracking.

When does ChatGPT Ads make sense and when does it not?

It makes sense for products and services that the customer researches before buying: tools, electronics, furniture, gifts, travel, experiences, courses, local services with a longer selection process. It makes sense for online shops with a product feed. It makes less sense for low-value impulse purchases, for businesses in restricted categories (health, finance, law outside the USA) and for audiences dominated by paying ChatGPT subscribers — they do not see ads. It makes no sense as a replacement for Google before there is data from at least one full test.

It is recognised by signs that are checked before production:

enquiries sound like “which one should I choose”, not like “where do I buy” — then the conversation precedes the search;

days, not minutes, pass between first contact and the order;

there is a page that explains the choice and compares options, not just a product card;

the catalogue has accurate prices and availability, to withstand a product feed campaign;

the category is permitted where you advertise.

When none of the signs is present, the budget stays in Google.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Ads versus Google Ads

Does ChatGPT Ads replace advertising in Google?

Not at present. Google captures formulated search with proven volume; ChatGPT is present earlier in the decision. The sensible approach is a test with a small budget as an additional channel.

Can I carry over my keywords from Google as context hints?

Not one to one. Keywords are useful for understanding intent, but hints are written as descriptions of situations, not as words.

Is a click cheaper in ChatGPT?

There are no official benchmarks. The right measure is the break-even cost per click for your business and the cost per result, not a comparison between platforms.

Is there a search terms report in ChatGPT Ads?

No. Ads Manager shows impressions, clicks, spend and conversions by campaign, group and ad, but not the conversations that triggered the ad.

Which channel should I test first as an online shop?

If you already work with Google Shopping, a ChatGPT product feed campaign is the natural complement — the same catalogue, a different moment in the decision.

Conclusion

Google Ads and ChatGPT Ads do not compete for the same moment. Google captures formulated search with keywords and mature tools; ChatGPT is present next to the conversation in which the customer is still describing and comparing. The differences in targeting, payment, formats and measurement are real, and there are still no benchmarks for ChatGPT. The right decision is a controlled test as an additional channel, read by cost per result.

Request a quote for ChatGPT ads →

Related articles: Advertising in ChatGPT: how it works · Google advertising · Attribution models

Sources: OpenAI Help Center — Create Campaigns · OpenAI Help Center — FAQ (benchmarks) · CTI Digital — Early findings from ChatGPT Ads campaigns

Sources

Google Ads Help: Performance Max campaigns

Google Ads Help: Shopping campaigns

Google Ads Help: Enhanced Conversions

Google Ads Help: Consent Mode

ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads capture a different moment in the customer journey.
